Some thoughts on Philly

The food was fantastic. Maybe I've been in a town too long where Walmart is the place to be, but it was so nice to be in a real city. I had crepes at the Terminal market in the morning, decent coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice. Belgian beer and mussels (-mussels!!! for 10 bucks in a giant pot!!)

And the art! I went to the Penn Academy of Fine Arts and saw the student show. I almost cried. The art was GOOD and I think the tears came when I realized not only did it sell for 4,000 but it was done by undergrads. Ironically the MFA show upstairs was more comforting, more angst-y, less polished. Obviously more mature though.

It was nice to see such good work from them. I was exclaiming over drawings by Jennifer Hall, and I must have been going on enough to attract questions from a stranger who turned out to be her dad. I usually don't do that, obviously the work was that good.

Saw the liberty bell, city hall, history without the pomp and circumstance, very elegant. I love this city! Went to the art museum and was baffled by the Kahlo exhibit headset situation. Paid $17 and couldn't see around all the headset wearing patrons to see the work. The capacity crowd was all listening in silence, no natural movement of viewing. Found it frustrating, but the rest of the collection was LOVELY. They have a Van Gough where he paints rain from the window of his asylum that I can't believe isn't famous.

All and all a great trip, looking forward to more time there.

Debate

So apparently my paintings seem masculine. Not supine= brash imagery, complementary jarring color schemes, intense and aggressive. This seems to be out of line with my personality. More peaceful and harmonious. Perhaps I fight against this quality due to the fear that I may find the work boring. Well subtlety is not boring, much like moonlight unifying nature (still with its element of danger/fear)
So what goes? Color or brush marks. Something has to the unify and something is defeating space. We saw with the black and white photos how completely different (and some might argue-better) the paintings were.
